Early Life

Edwin van der Sar was born in Voorhout, Netherlands, on October 29, 1970. He grew up in a football-loving family, with his father playing for a local amateur team.

Van der Sar developed a passion for football as a child and began playing at a young age. He began as a forward but quickly realized that his abilities were better suited to the goalkeeper position.

Career

Edwin van der Sar had a highly successful football career, playing as a goalkeeper for top European clubs and representing the Netherlands national team. Here are the details of his career:

Club Career:

Manchester United (2005-2011):

On June 10, 2005, Manchester United announced they had signed goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for a reported fee of £2 million.

He is regarded as the best goalkeeper in Manchester United history, even surpassing Peter Schmeichel’s legacy, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

He was also selected for the PFA’s All-Decade Team from 2006–07.

Despite playing with a nagging groin injury, Van der Sar had his best season since his arrival in 2007-08.

On December 12th, 2008, Van der Sar signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United, keeping him with the club through the end of the 2009-10 season.

A 5-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on January 27 saw Manchester United break the club and Premier League record for consecutive clean sheets, set previously by Petr Cech in the 2004-05 season, with 1,032 minutes going by without allowing a goal.

In the club’s next game four days later, he smashed the all-time English league record, previously held by Steve Death of Reading and set in 1979, by playing for 1,103 minutes.

After keeping another clean sheet against West Ham on February 8, 2009, the record was at 1,212 minutes, surpassing the 1,155-minute mark set by Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark in 1971 in the British top flight.

Van der Sar had gone 1,311 consecutive minutes without allowing a league goal.
He earned the 2008-2009 Barclays Golden Glove Award with 21 shutouts.

Despite this, 14 years after his first win at Ajax, he won the UEFA award for Best European Goalkeeper again.

His United teammate Ryan Giggs won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, but Van der Sar was still included in the PFA Team of the Year.

Van der Sar broke his finger in Manchester United’s preseason tournament at the Audi Cup, and as a result, he missed the first dozen games of the 2009-10 season.

On February 26, 2010, Van der Sar signed a contract extension with Manchester United that would keep him with the club through the end of the 2010-11 season.

In the 2010-11 season, Van der Sar was a key player for Manchester United. According to news outlets in Britain, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Van der Sar’s retirement from the Premier League at the end of the 2010-11 season on December 23.

He made his third consecutive appearance in the PFA Team of the Year after also being named in 2007 and 2008.

His final game was a 4-2 win over Blackpool at Old Trafford on 22 May 2011, sealing Blackpool’s relegation from the Premier League and ending his time with the club.

At 40 years and 211 days old, he was the oldest male player to feature in a European Cup final in the Champions League era; Dino Zoff holds the all-time record at 41 years and 86 days old when he appeared in the 1983 European Cup Final. His final game for United was on May 28 against Barcelona; United lost 3-1.

Immediately after the game, van der Sar announced his retirement from professional football.
