On July 1, 1975, Karen was working at a Red Lobster restaurant in Colorado Springs when a group of men attempted to rob it but failed. Instead of following through with their plan, the attackers instead kidnapped Karen instead and held her captive, assaulted her, and later stabbed her to death before leaving her on her own to crawl to a nearby house but too weak to seek assistance; her body was eventually discovered the following morning.
