Billy’s Tragic Death
Billy Grammer’s tragic death has remained at the forefront of his family’s minds for many years. William, along with his brother Stephen, perished in a scuba diving accident off Saint Thomas. Unfortunately, Billy never resurfaced from his dive; unfortunately his brother Stephen tried to find him but tragically succumbed to an air embolism when ascending too rapidly while William remains missing today.
Kelsey Grammer has spoken publicly about this event, lamenting how authorities in the Virgin Islands failed to adequately deal with it and focused more on tourism than reporting the facts of his accident.
Billy Grammer – the Musician
Billy Grammer became one of the most celebrated figures in country music during his long and distinguished career, becoming known for both singing and guitar playing skills. Billy is best remembered as an iconic performer on one of the world’s premier country music stages: Grand Ole Opry.
Billy went beyond singing. He co-founded a guitar company in Nashville where he designed and marketed his Grammer guitar line – it even earned recognition in 1969 by being included in the Country Music Hall of Fame! Billy’s success in both music and guitar design earned him respect from fellow country musicians alike.
Billy Grammer in His Later Years
In Billy’s later years, he battled degenerative eye disease known as Retinitis Pigmentosa which eventually led him to blindness. Yet even after losing his sight he continued working within music industry; even when blind he received recognition as 50-year member of Grand Ole Opry. In 2009 Billy received this honorary title.
Billy’s health had gradually declined since 2003 and on August 10, 2011 at 85 he passed away at Benton Hospital after a long illness and heart attack earlier that year. His passing marked an extraordinary life both musically and through family history.
