His father was Devdas Gandhi, the youngest son of Mahatma Gandhi. Devdas worked as a journalist and later became the editor of the Hindustan Times.

Ramchandra had three siblings. His brother Rajmohan Gandhi became a well-known historian and author. Another brother, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, served as a diplomat and later Governor of West Bengal. His sister Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee devoted her life to social work and Gandhian causes.
