Andy Murray, whose full name is Sir Andrew Barron Murray, is a Scottish tennis player. He was born on May 15, 1987, in Glasgow, Scotland, and rose to prominence in the sport during the 2010s, when he won three Grand Slam titles and two men’s singles Olympic gold medals.

Murray fought against himself on the court nearly as much as he did against his competition, despite the fact that he was plainly endowed with exceptional skill from an early age, possessing speed, power, and a light touch. His upbringing was forever changed by a catastrophe that occurred in 1996 at the primary school he attended in Dunblane (Scotland) when a gunman opened fire and killed 17 people. (Murray hide in a classroom during the massacre in order to survive, and afterward, he rarely spoke up about the incident.) He left Scotland when he was a teenager to complete his tennis education in Spain, where he learned to play on clay and fend for himself. His mother, who was a professional tennis coach, was his primary mentor throughout this time.

In 2004, Murray won his first important title, the junior U.S. Open. However, his path to the top was not easy, just like many of his matches were difficult. Even though he had broken into the top 10 in the world in April 2007 and the top 4 two years later, he was unable to break the stranglehold on the Grand Slam championships that was exercised by the “Big Three” players of the time, which were Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Between the years of 2008 and 2012, Murray competed in and reached the final of four Grand Slam tournaments, but he was unsuccessful each time. At the beginning of 2012, he decided to work with Ivan Lendl, a former tennis ace from the Czech Republic and winner of eight Grand Slam titles, as his coach. This decision turned out to be quite successful for Murray. The enigmatic Lendl, who had also been defeated in the finals of his first four Grand Slam tournaments, instilled in Murray a stronger sense of self-control and self-reliance.

Murray’s breakthrough came in August 2012 when he finally defeated Federer on Wimbledon’s center court to win the men’s singles gold medal at the London Olympic Games. This victory erased Murray’s tearful loss to the same opponent in the Wimbledon final on the same court a month earlier. Murray’s breakthrough allowed him to win the men’s singles gold medal at the London Olympic Games. A little over a month later, he won his first Grand Slam title in the United States Open after a tough match against Djokovic in the championship match. Murray defeated Djokovic in an unusually one-sided final match at Wimbledon in July 2013, and as a result, he became the first British player to win the men’s singles title at that tournament since Fred Perry did so 77 years earlier. Murray became one of the few top-tier men’s players in the history of tennis to recruit a female coach when he replaced Lendl with Amélie Mauresmo in June of 2014. Mauresmo was herself a winner of two Grand Slam titles during her playing days. In 2016, Andy Murray got back together with Ivan Lendl, and in July of that same year, he won the men’s singles title at Wimbledon for the second time. The following month, he competed in the men’s singles tennis event at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and he won another gold medal.

Murray’s struggles in 2017 were mostly down to a hip ailment, and by the close of the year, he and Lendl went their separate ways once more. In 2018, Andy Murray underwent surgery that severely limited his ability to play tennis. Shortly before the Australian Open in January 2019, he announced that he was considering retiring that year, citing ongoing issues with his hip. Murray gave his reason for considering retirement as being that he wanted to end his career. Later on, in the same month, he underwent a second procedure. In June, he made his comeback to competition by participating in the doubles event at the Queen’s Club (with Feliciano Lopez), and the two of them ended up winning the championship.

In 2013, Murray was given the honor of being an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and in the New Year’s Honours list of 2017, he was given the honor of becoming a knight.
