Early Life and Career Beginnings

Debra Marshall was born on March 2, 1960. She grew up with a passion for entertainment and soon found herself involved in the world of professional wrestling. Her journey started in 1995, when she first joined WCW. Debra was introduced as the manager of her then-husband Steve “Mongo” McMichael, who was a former NFL player turned wrestler.

She joined the WWF in 1998, after several years elsewhere. In the WWF, she emerged as a popular personality. She was in charge of well-known wrestlers, such as Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart. She earned the status of a beautiful woman who could make the crowd shout or boo. She was also known as Queen Debra in WCW and simply Debra in WWF. Her most memorable accomplishment came in the year 1999 when she captured the WWF Women’s Championship by beating Sable through an Evening Gown Match, a moment fans would talk for a long time.

Marriage with Steve Austin

In 1998, Debra met Steve Austin in the WWF, where she was working. At the time, Steve was already a huge wrestling star, with an intense style and the catchphrase “Stone Cold.” The two began dating quickly and moved in together in 2000.

On September 13, 2000, Debra and Steve got married in a small ceremony at The Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. There were just a few close friends to witness their union; Jim Ross had the honor of standing by Steve as his best man. Fans were wild about the couple: they were a powerful pair in wrestling, and in real life as well. But such would not be the case.

The Trouble in Their Marriage

Their marriage, however was not as ideal behind the curtains. On June 15, 2002, police officers responded to a report at their house when Debra was discovered to have visible injuries. The event resulted in the arrest of Steve Austin for misdemeanor assault. He subsequently pleaded no contest. This plea was essentially an admission that he was guilty but allowed him to receive probation, serve some community service, and pay a fine.

During their marriage, Debra spoke publicly about the abuse she endured. In part, she said, it was partly due to Steve’s use of steroids and alcohol. She added that Steve’s demeanor became controlling and violent, which made their relationship so difficult. She also narrated how, in many ways, Steve’s problems impacted their marriage.

After the split, Debra auctioned her wedding ring for over $27,000. She donated some of the money to charities that help victims of domestic abuse, showing her support for others who might be going through similar situations.
