Emma Watson hasn’t acted since wrapping production on Greta Gerwig’s beloved “Little Women” adaptation in December 2018. Given that the “Harry Potter” star is currently not attached to any film or television projects, her acting hiatus could easily exceed five years by the end of 2023. Why did Watson retire from acting? In a recent interview with the Financial Times, she stated that she “wasn’t very happy” with her job.

“I think I felt a bit caged,” Watson admitted. “What I found particularly difficult was having to go out and sell something over which I had little control.” To be able to stand in front of a film and have every journalist ask, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and spokesperson for things in which I was not involved.”

“I was held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say,” Watson went on. “And I realized that all I wanted to do was stand in front of things so that if someone was going to criticize me, I could say, in a way that didn’t make me hate myself, ‘Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.'”

Watson, whose credits include eight “Harry Potter” films as well as Darren Aronofsky’s “Noah,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “The Bling Ring,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and others, starred as Meg March in Gerwig’s “Little Women,” her most recent acting role to date. “Little Women” received six Academy Award nominations, including best picture.

Will Watson return to the screen? “Yes, absolutely,” she replied. “However, I’m content to sit and wait for the next right thing.” I enjoy what I do. It’s finding a way to do it without dividing myself into different faces and people. And I don’t want to go into robot mode any longer. “Is that correct?”
