Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, has committed to play college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC).
The 6-foot-3 guard from Cleveland made the announcement on his Instagram account on May 7th, 2023, saying, “I’m staying home. I’m committed to USC.” His commitment to the Trojans was met with excitement from USC fans and the college basketball world at large.
Bronny, who is currently ranked as the 19th best recruit in the class of 2023 by ESPN, had reportedly been considering other schools like Oregon and Oregon State. However, in the end, he chose USC, citing his desire to play close to home.
“I feel like USC is the best place for me to develop as a player and as a person,” Bronny said in a statement. “I’m excited to be part of a great program and to be able to represent my hometown.”
Bronny is following in his father’s footsteps by playing college basketball. LeBron James famously skipped college and went straight to the NBA, but he has been vocal about his desire to play alongside his son in the league. Bronny’s commitment to USC brings that possibility one step closer.
But for now, Bronny is focused on his college career. He joins a USC team that finished 5th in the Pac-12 Conference in the 2022-23 season with a 22-10 overall record. USC head coach Andy Enfield praised Bronny’s commitment, saying, “We’re thrilled to have Bronny join our program. He’s an incredibly talented player who has a bright future ahead of him.”
Bronny’s commitment is a major coup for USC and adds to the program’s growing reputation as a destination for top basketball talent. With Bronny on board, USC looks poised to compete for conference titles and deep runs in the NCAA Tournament in the years to come.
