Early Life And Family
River Phoenix was born River Jude Bottom on August 23, 1970, in Madras, Oregon. He was the oldest of five siblings, and his parents, John Bottom, a carpenter and a landscaper, and Arlyn Dunetz, a secretary for NBC in a former job, later changed their surname to Phoenix. This represented a new beginning.
River was raised in a family of siblings Rain Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix, Liberty Phoenix, and Summer Phoenix, in addition to a sister named Jodean Bottom, who was a year older. The family lived in a peculiar manner. They frequently moved from place to place and lived among a sect of a religious group named “Children of God.” In 1978, they left this sect and resettled in the U.S.

A Creative Childhood
The Phoenix family did not have much money. There were occasions when a stable residence was a problem for them. River, along with his brothers and sisters, used to contribute to their family income by playing music and singing in the streets. River knew how to play the guitar from a very early age.

“Tragic Death
On October 31, 1993, River Phoenix collapsed in front of The Viper Room in West Hollywood. River had taken a combination of heroin and cocaine. His brother, Joaquin, who was merely 18 years of age, called 911. River was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. River was only 23 years of age.
His death came as a huge shock in Hollywood, as it broke many hearts.
