In November 2017, McTominay told Malky Mackay, who was in charge of performance for the Scottish Football Association, that he wanted to focus on making the first team for Manchester United.
In February 2018, the manager of the club, José Mourinho, said that the new manager of Scotland, Alex McLeish, should choose McTominay “because it looks like England is missing him.” McTominay promised to stay with Scotland, and the team picked him to play in two friendly games in March. Later that month, McTominay’s grandfather said that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him to play for Scotland. Brian McClair, the coach of the Manchester United youth team, explained “McLeish put in a lot of work to get to Carrington to meet him because it was in the middle of the bad weather we were having. He did it, make a case for it. He got a text from Gareth Southgate.” McTominay said this about the talk he had with McLeish: “He came all the way from the other side of the country to talk to me, and I have to thank him for that. The talk we had was not too complicated. I’ve always wanted to play for Scotland, even when I was a kid. When he called me up, it was a very proud moment for me, and I hope I can keep going and do well.”
