Before beginning his professional life, Silvio served in the U.S. Air Force for three years – this experience helped mold his discipline and work ethic which would later influence Madonna and her siblings.
Career Journey
After leaving military service, Silvio became an engineer. Working as an engineer design supervisor at Chrysler and General Motors required precision and commitment from him, providing stability for his family in Michigan.
Later he established the Ciccone Vineyard and Winery in Suttons Bay, Michigan. Although running a vineyard was different than engineering, Silvio approached it with equal passion and effort. His children also helped out at the vineyard to gain experience of hard work.
Family Life
Silvio married Madonna Louise Fortin, who was of French-Canadian descent. She served as both homemaker and vineyard manager, giving birth to six children: Anthony Ciccone, Martin Ciccone, Madonna Paula Ciccone, Christopher Ciccone, Melanie Ciccone.

Three years later, in 1966, Silvio married Joan Gustafson and had two more children with her: Mario Ciccone and Jennifer Ciccone. Joan played an integral part in raising all four of them; however Madonna and her siblings often struggled to accept her as their stepmother.

Silvio always prioritized family unity and discipline. Although his strictness could sometimes be challenging for his children, he knew it helped shape their success.
Relationship with Madonna
Silvio’s impact on Madonna was evident; his strong work ethic and discipline left an indelible imprint on her life. Madonna often speaks about how Silvio taught her the value of hard work; this lesson helped her navigate her career successfully.
Madonna and Silvio did not always share an easy relationship, with Madonna’s rise to stardom causing tension at times. Over time, however, their bond began healing. Madonna shared her heartfelt tribute for Silvio’s 93rd birthday via Instagram that year, showing how much love and respect she still had for him.
Silvio even attended Madonna’s concert in Detroit as part of her Celebration tour and publicly thanked him for his guidance and support, cementing their strong relationship. This moment represented their special relationship.

Silvio’s Losses and Strength
Silvio has experienced many losses throughout his life. The loss of his first wife was devastating; Joan Ciccone died of cancer at 81; Anthony Ciccone passed away earlier as well.
Silvio was undaunted in spite of these obstacles and continues to inspire those around him through his resilience and dignity – including Madonna herself. He taught his children to face life’s obstacles without giving up.
