Wes Bentley Biography
Birth, Childhood, and School life
Bentley was the third of Cherie Baker and David Bentley’s four kids and was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He spent much of his childhood in Little Rock. His parents are both United Methodist clergy; his dad is a minister and his mom is a chaplain and ordained elder in the Arkansas Conference. His paternal grandfather preached the gospel. It’s been shown that he had ancestry in Germany, Scotland, and England.
He completed high school at Sylvan Hills in Sherwood, Arkansas, and graduated in 1996.
He was a member of Group 29 at the Juilliard School’s Drama Division (1996-2000) but dropped out after a year to focus on acting.
Acting Career
Bentley’s cinematic credits include the Oscar-winning American Beauty as well as the critically acclaimed films The Four Feathers, P2, and Ghost Rider. Both Roland Joffé’s There Be Dragons and Stephen King’s Dolan’s Cadillac, based on the author’s short story, featured him prominently. Bentley and three of his old roommates, Chad Lindberg, Brad Rowe, and Greg Fawcett, are the main characters of the Tony Zierra documentary My Big Break, in which they attempt to realize their dream of becoming successful actors in Hollywood.
Bentley portrayed the demonic primary antagonist Blackheart in the 2007 film Ghost Rider.
At the Classic Stage Company in New York City in 2010, he co-starred with Nina Arianda in the world premiere of David Ives’ Venus in Fur.
Bentley played Seneca Crane, the movie’s game maker, in the March 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games.
Bentley co-starred with Amber Tamblyn and Vincent Piazza in Gabriel Cowan’s 2012 independent film 3 Nights in the Desert.
Despite starring Bentley and Scott Speedman in the pilot episode, Ryan Murphy’s Open was not picked up for a full season on HBO. In the year after, during Season 4 (Freak Show) of Murphy’s FX series American Horror Story, Bentley had a guest starring role. In the fifth season of Hotel, he was elevated to the main cast, playing the role of Detective John Lowe. In the 2016 season 6 installment, Roanoke, he had a significant role.
In 2018, he began playing Jamie Dutton on Yellowstone on the Paramount Network.
On the 9th of December, 2022, Bentley revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he had turned down the role of Spiderman, which eventually went to Tobey McGuire.
Marriage
From 2001 through 2009, Bentley was married to Jennifer Quanz, an actress. His substance misuse was blamed for their 2009 divorce. In 2010, he wed the producer Jacqui Swedberg; the couple has since welcomed a boy (2010) and a daughter (2014).
He detailed his rapid decline into drug addiction following the popularity of American Beauty in a New York Times piece published on February 8, 2010. He claimed he hid his drug use from his ex-wife; after their 2006 divorce, he moved into a new apartment and started using narcotics regularly. He worked here and there, never enough to cover his expenses or provide for his drug habit. The effects of his addiction became apparent on the sets of P2 and Weirdsville, and he was eventually arrested and forced to enter treatment in 2008. Unfortunately, he fell back into his old habits and “used heroin till he was broke.
Other
He claimed that in July of 2009, he told a friend, “I’m an alcoholic and a drug addict in need of treatment. I really need assistance right now because if I don’t I will die “. Back in a 12-step program, he’s been sober for some time now and is happy to report that he’s making progress in his rehabilitation.
Bentley’s obscurity as a young actor, his meteoric rise to popularity after American Beauty, his subsequent emotional struggle with stardom, and his eventual declaration that he was in recovery from an addiction to drugs and alcohol are all captured in the documentary My Big Break (2009). He took the first step in reviving his career by starring in the Off-Broadway premiere of David Ives’ Venus in Fur.
While both of Bentley’s parents are prominent figures in the Methodist church, his grandpa was an evangelical minister who took offense to the series’ depiction of sexually suggestive scenes in Yellowstone.
