Kanu Gandhi, whose full name was Kanu Ramdas Gandhi, was the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India’s freedom movement. He was born in 1928 into the famous Gandhi family.
Kanu was the son of Ramdas Gandhi and his wife Nirmala Gandhi. His grandparents were Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, who both played major roles in India’s independence struggle.

A Memorable Moment During the Salt March
One of the most famous moments from Kanu Gandhi’s childhood happened during the Salt March, also known as the Dandi March.
In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led thousands of people on a long walk to protest British salt laws. During this historic march, young Kanu was seen walking close to his grandfather.
Some well-known photographs show the small boy moving ahead on the beach at Dandi while Gandhi walked with his stick. These images became powerful symbols of the freedom movement.

Education and Move to the United States

In October 2016, Kanu Gandhi suffered a heart attack and brain hemorrhage in Surat, Gujarat. The medical emergency left him in a coma.
