A Tough Start
When Maddi was born, the doctors indicated that her survival chances were just around 60%. She spent a lot of time in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Indeed, she spent 128 days there, which is over four months.
She required assistance breathing and feeding. She had tubes to assist her. But even then, Maddi demonstrated how tough she was. Nurses indicated she would sometimes remove her own tubes and wriggle out of her swaddle. All could tell that she had a strong will to survive.
A Hard Time for Her Parents
Maddi’s mom and dad, AJ and Kate, found this time very stressful. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they couldn’t be with Maddi at the same time. Only one parent could visit her at once. That made things even harder.
Then, in June of 2020, AJ contracted COVID-19. He needed to avoid Maddi for two weeks. The family went through a very emotional period. Nevertheless, they remained optimistic. They celebrated every minor achievement that Maddi accomplished.
Finally Coming Home
Finally, after four long months, Maddi was able to return home in July 2020. AJ reported that just seeing her in their home ceiling was too much. Kate too felt emotional. It was their dream moment.
Maddi began doing well at home. She was pulling herself up, crawling around, and bursting with energy by the age of 15 months. Her parents were proud of what they had achieved.

AJ Pollock has talked about how Maddi changed his life. He said he learned how strong mothers are. He also said that being a dad made him see the world in a new way. Maddi’s fight helped him grow not just as a father, but as a person.
