Athing Mu started running when she was just 6 years old. Instead of running for her high school team, she joined the Trenton Track Club. She graduated from Trenton Central High School in 2020. In 2021, as a freshman at Texas A&M University, Mu had an amazing season. She set six collegiate records and won three NCAA titles. At only 19 years old, she won gold medals in the 800m and 4x400m relay at the Tokyo Olympics. She became the youngest American woman to win an individual Olympic track title since 1964.
Mu holds the U.S. record in the women’s 800m with a time of 1:54.97, set in 2023. She also holds the world under-20 record in the indoor 800m and the world U20 best in the indoor 600m. In 2022, Mu made history again by becoming the first American woman to win the 800m world championship title. She defended her Olympic 800m title in 2024 and also won gold in the 4x400m relay.
After her freshman year at Texas A&M, Mu turned professional. In 2023, she moved to Los Angeles to train with coach Bobby Kersee. Even though she raced less and found the transition to professional life tough, she bounced back and broke her own American record later that season.

Athing Mu was born to Deng Mu and Aluel Lual, who are both South Sudanese immigrants. Her family immigrated to the US in 2000. She is the 6th child of her parents 7 kids, she has 4 brothers named Deng Mu, Moa Mu, Tarig Mu, and Malual Mu, and 2 sisters named Aluel Mu and Aut Mu. Now her parents are separated, and her father is married to another woman.
