Cameron Sutton Biography
Childhood and School life
Located in Jonesboro, Georgia, Jonesboro High School was where Sutton got his education. As a senior, he played both cornerback and wide receiver for the Cardinal football team, and the team scored 19 times thanks to his 1,396 all-purpose yards. In high school, he was active on the baseball and basketball teams. According to Rivals.com, Sutton is a solid three-star prospect. He has decided to play college football for the University of Tennessee, led by Butch Jones.
In 2013, Sutton started all 12 games as a freshman and finished with 39 tackles, two interceptions, one sack, and a touchdown. For the 2014 season, he was a starter in all 13 games and finished with 37 tackles, plus three interceptions.
Career
By playing both safety and cornerback during the game, Sutton impressed scouts and earned an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where he improved his draught stock. He had four tackles overall, the most on the South’s winning squad as they beat the North 16-15. He participated in the NFL Combine and did almost all of the drills, excluding the short shuttle. At Tennessee’s Pro Day, where scouts and agents were present, Sutton ran the short shuttle, the three-cone drill, and some positional drills. Most experts and analysts who follow the NFL draught have Sutton pegged as a third-round pick. ESPN and NFLDraftScout.com both had him as the 15th best cornerback available in the draught.
Pittsburgh Steelers signed Sutton to a four-year, $3.21 million contract with a $736,128 signing bonus on June 13, 2017. He was in camp to compete with William Gay, Coty Sensabaugh, and Mike Hilton for the backup cornerback role. While playing in the Steelers’ final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on September 4, 2017, Sutton aggravated a hamstring injury and was subsequently placed on injured reserve.
After the preseason, Sutton sold his No. 20 jersey to Robert Golden because new free agent Joe Haden had purchased No. 21 from Golden. For his first professional season, Sutton chose jersey number 34.
Sutton started practicing again after his injury on October 31. There was a 21-day window in which the Steelers could decide whether to bring Sutton back from the IR or keep him there for the rest of the year. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback A.J. Sutton came off injured reserve on November 21. Sutton made his professional regular season debut after replacing Coty Sensabaugh at left cornerback in the second half of the Bengals game on December 4, 2017. A. J. Green, the Bengals’ receiver, had seven catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, which led to Sensabaugh’s benching. Sutton prevented Green from catching any passes and also deflected one, allowing the Steelers to rally from a 17-point deficit and win 23-20 over the Bengals. Week 14 saw Sutton make two solo tackles in a 39-38 win over the Baltimore Ravens. After Joe Haden suffered a fractured fibula in Week 10, he was replaced in the starting lineup by the rookie on December 17, 2017. Sutton made his first career start against the New England Patriots and finished with a season-high three combined tackles despite losing 27-24. The following week, Haden was back in the lineup, and Sutton went back to being a reserve for the final two games of the regular season. He played in five games as a rookie, starting one, and finished with five tackles (four solos) and a pass deflection.
After Robert Golden was waived by the Steelers on March 14, 2018, Sutton was able to return to wearing No. 20.
Against Cleveland, a division rival, in the season opener. The Browns’ Tyrod Taylor was the victim of Sutton’s first career interception. In Week 13’s 17-10 victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, Sutton’s snap count finally returned to its pre-decreased level.
Sutton’s 2019 campaign got off to a low-key start as the Steelers fell to 1-4. Sutton picked off Philip Rivers and returned the ball 26 yards for a touchdown in the sixth week’s prime-time game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He had his best performance of the year, finishing with an interception, three pass breakups, and a tackle. Sutton had his first punt return of the season go for 8 yards in Week 10 when the Steelers lost 21-7 to the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers had an 8-8 record overall and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row.
Sutton made his first interception of the season in Week 6 of the 2020 season, picking off a Baker Mayfield pass as the Baltimore Ravens won by a score of 38-7 over the Cleveland Browns.
