He was born into a family of German Jewish immigrants, with his parents, Harry Irving Winkler and Ilse Anna Maria (Hadra) Winkler, having escaped the Holocaust by moving to the United States in 1939. His father worked in a lumber import-export company, while his mother was a homemaker. His family escape from Nazi Germany and resettlement in the United States during world war II.

He has an older sister named Beatrice Winkler. More details about her besides her name are not known.
