Mike Hilton is an American football player. He currently plays for the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL as a cornerback.

Mike Hilton was born on March 9, 1994, in Fayetteville, Georgia.

College Career

Hilton enrolled at Mississippi in 2012. Hilton debuted in Week 2 against UTEP after missing the Rebels’ season opener against Central Arkansas. The following week, Ole Miss lost to Texas, and he made his first two tackles. Hilton started his first game on October 6, 2012, against Texas A&M, recording three solo tackles, a forced fumble, and two sacks of Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel. The Rebels lost 27–30. In Week 8, he had a career-best six combined tackles and two pass deflections to help the Rebels beat Arkansas 30–27. He started four of 12 games as a freshman and had 33 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, two sacks, two pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

2013 Hilton started the Rebels’ season opener against Vanderbilt at “Huskie” (strong hybrid safety). He had five tackles, two for losses, in the 39–35 win. He had eight tackles against Auburn on October 5, 2013. Hilton made his first career interception and four tackles as the Rebels defeated Troy 51–21 on November 16, 2013. He started 11 games and had 52 tackles (37 solos), 5.5 tackles for a loss, four pass deflections, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Hilton had a season-high nine combined tackles in Ole Miss’ 35–13 season-opening win over Boise State. In a 56–15 win over Louisiana–Lafayette on September 13, 2014, he had four tackles, a pass deflection, and his first interception of the season. He made eight tackles and his third interception of the season in a 7–10 loss to No. 24 LSU on October 25, 2014. Hilton had a career-high 71 tackles (48 solos), four tackles for a loss, three interceptions, and seven pass deflections in 13 starts and 13 games as a junior. He started 11 cornerbacks and two rover games and led the team with 71 tackles.

Senior Hilton wore #38. Ole Miss only gives this number to a player who embodies the spirit of former Rebels defensive back Chucky Mullins, who was paralyzed in 1989 after a head-first tackle broke four cervical vertebrae.

In Week 2, Hilton started at rover and had six tackles (one for a loss), a forced fumble, and half a sack in a 73–22 win over Fresno State. In a 52–3 win over New Mexico State on October 10, 2015, he had four tackles (three for a loss), a pass deflection, and his first interception of the season. Hilton had a career-high 11 tackles, 2.5 for a loss, one sack, a pass deflection, and an interception in the Rebels’ loss to Memphis the following week. He had 70 tackles (49 solos), 12.5 for a loss, 11 pass deflections, 1.5 sacks, and two interceptions in 11 starts and 13 games as a senior.

Hilton played 49 games and 39 starts in college, recording 226 tackles (156 solos), 25.5 tackles for a loss, 24 pass deflections, six interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 3.5 sacks.

Professional career

Jaguars

Jacksonville Jaguar’s undrafted free agent Hilton signed on May 1, 2016. Hilton competed with Aaron Colvin, Dwayne Gratz, Peyton Thompson, Josh Johnson, Demetrius McCray, Briean Boddy-Calhoun, and Nick Marshall for a backup cornerback position during training camp. Jacksonville Jaguars released Hilton on August 29, 2016.

Patriots

Hilton joined the Patriots’ practice squad on 9/6/16. On September 14, 2016, the team released him.

Hilton joined the Steelers practice squad on 12/13/16. Hilton spent his rookie season on the Steelers practice squad and did not play in 2016. On January 24, 2017, he signed a Steelers reserve/future contract. He reunited with Senquez Golson, his Ole Miss backup.

2017 Hilton battled William Gay and Senquez Golson for the nickelback position in training camp. Hilton began the season as the starting Nickelback.

He had two tackles in the Steelers’ season-opening win over the Cleveland Browns. Hilton had the 28th-best Pro Football Focus cornerback grade in 2017, 83.6.

After Sean Davis and Joe Haden changed numbers, Hilton switched to No. 28. Mike Tomlin kept Hilton as the nickelback and fifth backup cornerback behind Joe Haden, Artie Burns, Coty Sensabaugh, and Cameron Sutton to start the season. Hilton had five tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception in a 30-27 win at Tampa Bay on September 24, 2018. Hilton left the game with an elbow injury and missed the Steelers’ Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He had a season-high eight tackles in a 24-21 loss to the Oakland Raiders in Week 14. In 15 games, he had 57 tackles (44 solo), eight pass deflections, one sack, and one interception. Pro Football Focus gave him the 43rd-best cornerback grade of 69.9 in 2018.

Hilton intercepted Lamar Jackson in Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens in a 23–26 overtime loss. Hilton forced a fumble on Miami Dolphins running back Mark Walton in Week 8, which Steven Nelson recovered in the 27–14 win. Hilton recovered a T. J. Watt-forced fumble on Devin Singletary in Week 15’s 10–17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Hilton received a Steelers second-round restricted free-agent tender on March 18, 2020. On June 12, 2020, he signed the tender.

Hilton led the team with eight tackles, sacked Jeff Driskel, and recovered a fumble in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos. Hilton intercepted Deshaun Watson in Week 3 against the Houston Texans. Hilton led the team with eight tackles and sacked Carson Wentz in Week 5’s 38–29 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Hilton intercepted Josh Allen’s pass and forced Dawson Knox’s fumble, which the Steelers recovered in Week 14’s 15–26 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Hilton recovered a Philip Rivers fumble and intercepted a Rivers pass in the fourth quarter to help the Steelers beat the Indianapolis Colts 28–24 in Week 16.
