Getting Married to Martha
Andrew and Martha dated on a blind date while Andrew was attending Yale Law School. They clicked and began dating. They got married in 1961 after around one year of dating. Andrew was 23 years old at that time, and Martha too was young. The two of them were a perfect couple.
They shared a passion for home renovation, and together they spent a lot of time rehabbing houses. They rehabbed a schoolhouse in the Berkshires and eventually purchased a fixer-upper house known as Turkey Hill Farm in Westport, Connecticut. This farm was a central part of Martha’s life brand and where she launched many of her businesses.
Life with Martha and Family
Andrew and Martha were married and had only one child, a daughter, Alexis Stewart, who was born in 1965. Alexis spent most of her life surrounded by her parents’ work and DIY projects at home. But their careers and hectic lifestyle appeared to consume a lot of time, and they found it difficult to relate to Alexis. Andrew would later confess that he wished he had devoted more time to his daughter. He mentioned that concentrating too much on their home projects and work created distance in their relationship.
Separation and Divorce
Andrew and Martha divorced after 25 years of marriage in 1987. The divorce was completed in 1990. It was a tough breakup, and Andrew allegedly requested the court to issue an order against Martha not to contact him. Martha has since openly discussed her own cheating while married. She confessed to having been cheating on Andrew at the beginning but feels that Andrew never found out.
Though their marriage ended, Andrew and Martha have both uttered words of regret about the way their marriage ended. Andrew also believes that the divorce, as well as being estranged from Alexis, hurt him immensely. It was apparent that both of them had difficulties of their own within the relationship.
Life After Divorce
Upon divorcing, Andrew married Robyn Fairclough in 1993 in a second marriage. Robyn had previously been Martha’s assistant. Robyn was 21 years Andrew’s junior. Their marriage was short-lived, and they later divorced.
Andrew married Shyla Nelson Stewart, president and CEO of Fieldstone Publishing, in 2016. The nature publishing company was her focus. They reside half-time between Pasadena, California, and Lake Champlain, Vermont. They share a blended family with five kids and three grandkids.
Andrew and Shyla have also made some comments publicly about some of the things Martha stated in her Netflix documentary, in which she claimed Andrew was being disloyal. Shyla spoke about Andrew’s first marriage being painful and said that it was difficult to see Martha continuing to bring up the same issues all these years after their divorce.
