Early Life

Geraldine Estelle Halliwell, better known as “Geri,” was born on August 6, 1972, in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. Laurence Francis Halliwell and Ana Maria Halliwell gave birth to her. Her mother is of Spanish ancestry, and her father is of Swedish and English descent.

She attended Watford Grammar School for Girls before continuing her education at Camden School for Girls. Before she started her music career, she worked as a nightclub dancer, a TV presenter, and a glamour model, among other things.

Career

The girl group The Spice Girls, which included Geri Halliwell, was formed in 1994. Other than Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, and Melanie Chisholm were also members of the group. They signed with Virgin Records in 1995. Their debut single “Wannabe,” an anthem for strong women, was released the following year. Despite some criticism, it became a worldwide phenomenon, topping the charts in countries as diverse as Belgium, Australia, and Germany.

Towards the end of 1996, they unveiled their debut studio album, titled Spice. The album did very well commercially thanks in large part to the success of the singles “Wannabe,” “2 Become 1,” and “Who Do You Think You Are.” It topped the album charts of many countries, including the US Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart, among others. With over 23 million copies sold worldwide, it not only broke the record for the most successful album by a girl group but also entered the pantheon of the best-selling albums of all time.

Their second album, “Spiceworld,” was just as successful when it came out in 1997. The album peaked at the top of the UK Albums Chart and at position #3 on the US Billboard 200. As of the end of the first week, it had sold nearly 200,000 copies. The album’s lead single, “Spice Up Your Life,” reached the top five on the charts in a number of countries. The album was met with mostly positive reviews from critics. In 2000, the band released a new album titled “Forever” as a follow-up to their previous hit.

The outrageous and sexually suggestive outfits Halliwell wore while performing with the Spice Girls, along with her red hair and platform heels, earned her the nickname “Ginger Spice.”

When Geri Halliwell decided to leave the Spice Girls and pursue a solo career in the late ’90s, she made the decision public. Her debut single, titled “Look at Me,” was released in May of 1999. For the first time, it peaked within the top five charts around the world. In the fall of that year, she dropped her self-titled debut album. On the UK Albums Chart, it peaked at number 4, and on the US Billboard 200, it peaked at number 47.

Her next album, 2001’s “Scream If You Want to Go Faster,” was a commercial success despite the fact that it did not match the success of her previous effort. Overall, it generated $1.5 million in revenue. Responses to it were mixed, with some people really liking it and others really disliking it. The band won “International Song of the Year” at the 2002 NRJ Music Awards for their smash hit “It’s Raining Men.”

Passion, her 2005 album, went on to sell roughly half a million copies. She went on tour with the rest of the original Spice Girls in 2007.

Other Works

In her autobiography, “If Only,” published in 1999, Geri Halliwell reflected on her time spent in the band. More than a million copies were purchased in the United Kingdom alone, making this book an instant bestseller. She gave all of her earnings to a breast cancer organization.

Just for the Record was her second memoir, published in 2002. It detailed her meteoric rise to stardom and the upheavals that came with her newfound fame. In 2008, she also penned the ‘Ugenia Lavender book series for kids.

Additionally, she has made numerous appearances in both reality TV and documentaries. In the cartoon series “Franklin,” she provided her voice for a character. Both the 2004 British comedy film Fat Slags and the 2009 action comedy Crank: High Voltage featured her in supporting roles. This time it was the 2012 documentary ‘Viva Forever: The Spice Girls Story,’ in which she had a starring role.

Major Works

Geri Halliwell’s early works include the Spice Girls’ second studio album, titled “Spiceworld.” The album broke records on a global scale, selling nearly 190,000 copies in its first week. It reached the number three spot on the US Billboard 200 and number one in many other countries including Belgium, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom. Critical reception was also favorable, and the album was eventually certified multi-platinum in a number of territories.

She appeared as a supporting character in “Crank: High Voltage,” an action comedy. It featured Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Clifton Collins Jr., Dwight Yoakam, and Efren Ramirez. Made for only $20 million, the film ended up grossing $34 million. Even critical reception was enthusiastic.

Personal Life

Geri Halliwell had a brief relationship with the screenwriter Sacha Gervasi in 2005, during which time she became pregnant with their daughter Bluebell Madonna. Bluebell Madonna was born the following year.

In later years, she began a relationship with Christian Horner in 2014. They did end up getting married in May of 2015 though. In 2017, she became a mother for the second time, to a little boy. Montague George Hector Horner is the name of the newborn child. Olivia is Geri’s only stepdaughter.
